The member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, Nikos Sofianos, is the candidate of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) for the mayorship of the Greek capital in October 8th regional and municipal elections.

An experienced KKE cadre, with a long political and social activity, Sofianos has been a member of the Athens Municipal Council since 2010 under the banner of the KKE-supported "Athens People's Rally".

Communist candidate for mayor of Athens sends powerful message for struggle

"We say ity clearly, powerfully, honestly: A strong KKE in all ballots, in the municipality and the regional government. The "People's Rally", our list, can express a movement of struggle and change in Athens and Attica", said the Communist Party of Greece's (KKE) candidate for mayor of Athens Nikos Sofianos. 

Sofianos, a member of the Party's Political Bureau and an Athens city councillor since 2010, said that "during the difficult years of austerity, which still persists, we gave the struggle by supporting the people's demands, asserting measures, pressing for solutions on the difficult daily life of our people which is affected by the policy of the municipal authority."

Nikos Sofianos, an experienced cadre of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and a member of the Athens' City Council, will be the Party's candidate for the mayoralty of the Greek capital city in May 2019 elections. More specifically, the KKE Party Organisation of Attica announced the candidate mayors for the municipalities of Athens and Piraeus, as well as the candidate governor of Attica. 

For the municipality of Athens, the candidate will be Nikos Sofianos, 53, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the KKE, also member of the Athens City Council since 2010. He was the Secretary of the Central Council of the Communist Youth (KNE) from 1991 to 2001.

Macedonia name dispute: KKE is opposed to FYROM's accession to NATO

The firm opposition of the Communist Party of Greece to NATO's plans in the Balkan region and the role of the imprialist alliance in the Macedonia name dispute, was stated by Nikos Sofianos, member of the Political Bureau of the Party's Central Committee, during an interview on ERT1.

“The negotiations that are currently taking place between Greece and the neighboring country [FYROM] are taking place under the umbrella of NATO and the Americans. These are the ones who accelerate the talks, aiming at the accession of FYROM in NATO” said Sofianos. 

He also added that both the government and other cosmopolitans as well as the organizers of the upcoming nationalist rally (which will take place on Sunday in Athens) “do not disagree with FYROM's accession to NATO, the alliance which is responsible for slaughtering the Balkans, dissolving Yugoslavia, bombing Serbia, creating minorities and utilizing irredentisms”.
