FIFA World Cup in Qatar is stained with working-class blood — Statement by the WFTU

In a statement about the FIFA World Cup 2022 that begins today, November 20, in Qatar, the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) stresses out:

The designation of this Arab emirate to host the event was already tainted by corruption. Billions of resources belonging to the Qatari people -as it is theirs all wealth found in their subsoil- passed into the hands of the large capitalist corporations.  Since then, the sponsorship of these companies has been supported by speculation and business from which only the elites of the Arab country benefit.

Communist Party of Britain: The European Super League is an assault on the game of the working class

With the following comment, posted on its social media accounts under the title "Listen to fans and players", the Communist Party of Britain (CPB) denounces the "European Super League" formed exclusively by major football clubs.

The comment reads:

"The Super League proposal is an attempt by the wealthy clubs to establish a perpetual monopoly and to resolve their debt issues: Barcelona are £1bn in debt and in financial crisis. Real Madrid could not afford one big signing last summer, Juventus have to find around £100m by the end of June. Internazionale’s owners sought emergency funding in February.

Diego Maradona, the Anti-imperialist

Millions for Ronaldo, crumbs for workers: Fiat's Agnelli shows what Capitalism means

Andrea Agnelli is the chairman of the Turin-based famous italian football club Juventus. He is also a heir of the also famous industrialist Agnelli family, owners of the Fiat automobile manufacturer.

Recently, Juventus reached a $120 million deal with Real Madrid over the transfer of the Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. More specifically, the 33 year-old player and Juventus signed a 4-year contract worth almost $630,000 a week.

However, when Agnelli spends such amounts of money for a football player, the workers at Fiat haven't seen any increase in their salaries during the last 10 years. On the contrary, thousands of Fiat workers have sustained cuts in their wages, while dismissals consists a common policy of the company in times of financial difficulties.

Statement of the KKE about the incidents in the PAOK vs AEK football match

Regarding yesterday's incidents and interruption of the football game between PAOK and AEK in Thessaloniki, the Press Office of the CC of the KKE issued the following statement:

"Yesterday's images in PAOK's stadium consist the mirror of the decay of football and big businessmen. What if the laws became stricter, what if foreign supervisors of UEFA came, what if the Greek Football Federation changed, what if professional judges were appointed? What remains is the "football" of the big businessmen who, under the tolerance and support of all governments - including the current one- play their own political and economic games on the backs of the teams and (football) fans. That is why the situation not only does not improve, but goes from bad to worse.

The banners of the Nazis deserve only one place: The dustbin of History

COMMENT:

The Golden Dawn flag waved by supporters of APOEL Nicosia during the football match against Olympiacos in Piraeus is a Nazi symbol. It is the symbol of a Nazi, fascist criminal organisation which tries to pose as a political party. It is a Nazi symbol because of Golden Dawn's Nazi ideology.

The issue isn't a typical matter related to UEFA policies about political messages in football. It's more than that. The shameful gesture of APOEL fans to wave the flag of Nazis consists a political and social issue. The symbols of Nazism and fascism, the symbols of Golden Dawn, have no place in football stadiums. They have no place anywhere.

Euro 2016: Nationalism and Fascism under the mask of Hooliganism

This year's UEFA European Championship, commonly known as Euro 2016, has been stained by the brutal violence and clashes between hooligans both inside and outside the stadiums.

It is true that football (or 'soccer', for our american friends) has always been a privileged field for the development of hooliganism. It's mass, popular character, as well as the tension and passion that creates to fans has been the source of multiple violent outbreaks between overzealous supporters around the world.
