Brazil: Communists bid farewell to Maria Prestes

"Maria Prestes: Present, today and always" reads a statement signed by Edmilson Costa, General Secretary of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB). 

The widow of long-time Brazilian communist leader Luiz Carlos Prestes, died on Friday in Rio de Janeiro due to complications from Covid-19. She was 92 years old. “A communist proud of her battle and the most great grandmother anybody might ever have,” Maria’s granddaughter wrote on Twitter. 

Brazilian communist leader Manuela d'Ávila received death threats from Bolsonaristas

In a statement issued on June 4th, the National Executive of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) refers to the despicable threats directed against Party cadre and former vice presidential candidate Manuela d'Ávila. 

According to the statement, Manuela and her family have been a target of hatred and propaganda by the far-right regime of Jair Bolsonaro.

The People vs Bolsonaro: The Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) calls for broad unity to defend democracy

On the occasion of the electoral victory of the far-right, dictatorship-admirer Jair Bolsonaro in the presidency, the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) calls for a broad democratic front in defense of democracy and people's rights. The statement, in both english and portuguese, is the following: 

The election of Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential elections establishes a new political period in our country, marked by threats to democracy, national patrimony, the sovereignty of the nation and the rights of the people. It was elected a president of the Republic clearly determined to establish a dictatorial government, to implement, blood and fire, an ultra-liberal and neo-colonial program.

KKE: Solidarity to Brazilian communists - Solidariedade aos comunistas do Brasil

In a message to the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), the International Relations Section of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) expresses its solidarity to the communists and the working people of Brazil. 

More specifically, the KKE condemns the antiworker-antipeople policy and the reactionary positions expressed by the presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro. 

Brazil's communists call for broad electoral democratic front against Bolsonaro

A broad electoral democratic front against the fascist presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro is in the making in Brazil, after the results of the first round and two weeks before the second round on October 28th. 

In the first round, the far-right Bolsonaro received 46% of the votes while the candidate of the social democratic Workers' Party (PT) Fernando Haddad got 29.3%.

In a statement, the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB)- the leader of which, Manuela D'Ávila is Haddad's vice presidential candidate- calls for broad support towards Haddad on the basis of the unity of the left forces. More specifically, the statement of the Communist Party's National Political Commission writes:

PT-PCdoB coalition in Brazil: Be aware of social democracy bearing gifts, comrades!

In a highly controversial decision, which may have negative effects for the country's working class movement in the long term, the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) agreed to participate in an electoral coalition with the social democratic Workers' Party (PT). 

The alliance between PCdoB and PT came as a result of the effort to create a broader alliance between "left forces" against the conservative and right-wing forces. More specifically, according to a statement issued by the Communist Party (PCdoB) "the coalition between PCdoB and PT has emerged as the possible and important alliance to build the victory of progressive forces in view of the strong orchestration of the conservative and coup forces."
