On April 25th, 1945, the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy (CLNAI) declared a general uprising in all territories still occupied by fascist forces. The partisan troops, with the communists at the forefront, liberated the main cities of Northern Italy and put an end to more than twenty years of fascist oppression. Eighty years after those events, the Communist Front of Italy, with the support of the Front of Communist Youth, is launching a popular mobilization for April 25th, reviving the slogan "Partisans for Peace" against imperialist war and historical revisionism regarding Italy's war of liberation.
The 80th anniversary of the Liberation comes at a historical moment in which, perhaps more than ever, the partisan struggle is being betrayed by an Italy that is light-years away from what our partisans fought for.
The situation in the world is rapidly deteriorating. The risk of a generalized imperialist war is becoming more and more concrete. The competition between monopolies, financial oligarchies, and capitalists of all countries is intensifying – as the ongoing “trade war” with the USA clearly shows – and threatens to drag the peoples of the world into the abyss. The arms race is back, with the EU announcing an 800-billion-euro rearmament plan.
The war in Ukraine between Russia and the US-EU-NATO bloc, the ongoing massacre in the Middle East, and all the other armed conflicts around the world show that the competition between capitalist powers for control of markets, market shares, energy and mineral resources, trade and supply routes, territories and spheres of influence is increasingly shifting from the economic and political arena to the military one. “War is the continuation of politics by other means”, and today, for the first time in decades, governments and supranational institutions are openly declaring that this is once again an option on the table, and that its costs will be offloaded onto the people and workers in the name of the so-called “war economy” – a term now used openly.
In recent years, we began promoting the slogan “Partisans for Peace” during the April 25th demonstrations, drawing inspiration from the mass movement of the same name which, between the 1940s and 1950s, saw partisans and resistance fighters from Italy and across Europe mobilize against the birth of NATO and against imperialism, together with communists from over 70 countries and involving millions of people. A history that has been deliberately ignored, yet it would be the best answer to the sermons about the need to become “Europe’s warriors”.
Faced with today’s war-mongering winds, the relevance of that choice is once again confirmed. We call on everyone to take to the streets under this slogan, to make it their own, to promote it and oppose the attempts to hijack April 25th and twist its meaning to serve the strategies of big capital and warmongers. These attempts have been ongoing for years: the distortion of the “European partisans” with EU flags, the hypocritical appeals to “anti-fascism” coming from the center-left, which for decades has ruled while carrying out right-wing policies, or the attempts to instrumentalize the story of the “Jewish Brigade” – a unit of the British army that had nothing to do with the Italian Resistance, in which hundreds of Jewish fighters really did participate – to support the genocidal policies of the State of Israel. The partisans would turn in their graves seeing an Italy ruled by the heirs of the MSI, and a center-left that uses the memory of the Resistance to support the imperialist plans of big capital, singing “Bella Ciao” while defending the interests of industrialists, bosses, and high finance.
We will bring this slogan and our communist contingents into the April 25th demonstrations in every city, in the firm belief that the best gift we could give today to the warmongers and our political enemies would be to abandon the streets – as, unfortunately, some on the left have chosen to do in recent years – handing our enemies the chance to use April 25th as they please, even though this date still holds deep meaning for the popular masses of our country. The conditions exist to take to the streets on April 25th with heads held high, defending and honoring the partisan resistance, its ideals, its banners.
AGAINST REARMAMENT AND IMPERIALIST WAR – PARTISANS FOR PEACE
Partigiani della Pace. Per un 25 aprile contro guerra e riarmo nell’80° della Liberazione
L’anniversario degli 80 anni della Liberazione cade in un momento storico in cui, forse più che in ogni altro, la lotta partigiana viene tradita da un’Italia che è lontana anni luce da ciò per cui i nostri partigiani hanno combattuto.
La situazione nel mondo sta precipitando. Il rischio di una guerra imperialista generalizzata è sempre più concreto. La competizione tra i monopoli, le oligarchie finanziarie e i capitalisti di tutti i paesi si inasprisce – come dimostra anche la “guerra dei dazi” in corso con gli USA – e minaccia di trascinare con sé i popoli di tutto il mondo. Torna la corsa agli armamenti, con l’UE che annuncia un piano di riarmo per 800 miliardi.
La guerra in Ucraina tra la Russia e il blocco USA-UE-NATO, il massacro in corso in Medio Oriente e tutti gli altri scenari di conflitto armato dimostrano che la competizione tra le potenze capitalistiche per il controllo dei mercati, delle quote di mercato, delle risorse energetiche e minerarie, delle rotte commerciali e di approvvigionamento, di territori e sfere di influenza, si sta spostando sempre più dal terreno economico e politico a quello militare. “La guerra è la continuazione della politica con altri mezzi”, e oggi per la prima volta dopo decenni, i governi e le istituzioni sovranazionali dichiarano apertamente che questa è di nuovo un’opzione sul tavolo, e che i suoi costi saranno scaricati sui popoli e i lavoratori in nome dell’“economia di guerra”, di cui pure si parla apertamente.
Negli scorsi anni abbiamo iniziato a promuovere nelle manifestazioni del 25 aprile lo slogan “Partigiani della Pace”, richiamando l’esperienza dell’omonimo movimento di massa che, a cavallo tra gli anni ’40 e ’50 del XX secolo, vide i protagonisti e combattenti delle guerre partigiane d’Italia e di tutta Europa mobilitarsi contro la nascita della NATO e contro l’imperialismo, assieme ai comunisti di oltre 70 paesi del mondo, coinvolgendo milioni di persone. Una storia colpevolmente ignorata, che sarebbe la migliore risposta ai sermoni sulla necessità di riscoprirsi “guerrieri d’Europa”.
Dinanzi ai venti di guerra, l’attualità di questa scelta trova di nuovo conferma. Chiamiamo tutti a scendere in piazza dietro questa parola d’ordine, a farla propria, a promuoverla e contrapporla ai tentativi di strumentalizzare il 25 aprile e distorcerne il significato a uso e consumo delle strategie del grande capitale e dei guerrafondai. Da anni assistiamo a questi tentativi: la mistificazione dei “partigiani d’Europa” con le bandiere dell’UE, gli appelli a un ipocrita “antifascismo” da parte di quel centro-sinistra che da decenni governa facendo cose di destra, o i tentativi di strumentalizzare a sostegno delle politiche genocide dello Stato di Israele la vicenda della “brigata ebraica”, reparto dell’esercito britannico che nulla ebbe a che vedere con la Resistenza italiana, nelle cui brigate combatterono davvero centinaia di ebrei. I partigiani si rivolterebbero nella tomba vedendo un’Italia in cui governano gli eredi del MSI e un centro-sinistra che li utilizza per sostenere i piani imperialisti del grande capitale e che canta “Bella Ciao” mentre difende gli interessi di industriali, padroni e grande finanza.
Porteremo questo slogan e i nostri spezzoni comunisti all’interno dei cortei del 25 aprile in tutte le città, nella convinzione che il migliore regalo che possiamo fare oggi ai guerrafondai e ai nostri avversari politici sia abbandonare il campo, come purtroppo anche alcuni a sinistra hanno deciso di fare da qualche anno, regalando ai nostri nemici la possibilità di utilizzare come meglio credono la data del 25 aprile, che ha ancora un significato per le masse popolari del nostro paese. Esistono le condizioni per sfilare nei cortei del 25 aprile a testa alta, difendendo e onorando la resistenza partigiana, le sue idee, le sue bandiere.
