Mercosur: The false dispute between progressives and neoliberals

On December 5 and 6, the 65th Summit of Presidents of Mercosur (Southern Common Market) was held in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay.

The meeting was attended by the presidents of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia -which recently became a full member of the bloc- and representatives of associated countries such as Colombia, Peru, Chile and Panama.

Contrary to the expectations generated by the propaganda laboratories, which present an apparent confrontation between supposedly antagonistic models ─progressive governments versus neoliberal governments─, the summit went smoothly, without any substantive diabetes and in an atmosphere of cordiality that really characterizes those who serve as representatives of capital; whose objective is none other than to expand business opportunities for their national bourgeoisie.

The great announcement of the summit was the progress in the definitive signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. For this purpose, the President of the European Commission was present at the meeting, together with a delegation of the organization. Although the agreement was announced as almost a fact, the truth is that the governments of France and Italy are opposed to the content of the agreement because they consider it a threat to their agricultural sector. On the other hand, the so-called progressive governments of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile, made up of political forces that in the past questioned the Free Trade Agreements by considering it to be the pinnacle of neoliberalism, did not issue a single comment against it.

In this way, the Summit of Presidents of Mercosur has contributed to remove the facades of the false antagonism between progressives and libertarians in the continent; demonstrating that both types of governments operate under the same basis: the interest of capital and, therefore, to the detriment of the interests and aspirations of the working class of the continent.
