No to Cyprus' NATO membership: Statement by the Communist Initiative of Cyprus

Last Thursday (28/11), Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed Nicosia’s active interest in NATO membership, underscoring the island nation’s strategic recalibration toward Western alliances. Speaking at a public event, Christodoulides disclosed that Cyprus is engaging with the US to explore pathways for future NATO accession.

In a statement, the Communist Initiative of Cyprus (Κομμουνιστική Πρωτοβουλία Κύπρου - Kıbrıs Komünist İnisiyatifi) stresses out:

"The Government is increasingly putting our people in the eye of the storm with the President's admission of the goal of Cyprus's accession to NATO. This development is not a bolt from the blue, but the result of the strategic choices of the Cypriot bourgeoisie and all governments. It comes on top of the fact that the British NATO bases have become a staging ground for imperialist wars in the region. Foreign services and troops are roaming the airports, ports and military installations undisturbed. The culmination of all this was the inauguration of the Cyprus-USA strategic dialogue last October, part of which is the acquisition by the USA of its own military installations within the Larnaca Military Complex and the Base in Mari.

We the people we must not forget that NATO, being an imperialist war organization, bears grave responsibilities for the twin crime in our homeland. After all, a NATO member country occupies 37% of our country's territory. NATO is responsible for the dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the drama that the peoples of the Balkans are still experiencing, for the wars in Iraq, the bombings in Libya, Yemen, and Syria. NATO supports the Zelensky regime that is bleeding the Ukrainian people.

NATO is not a pillar of stability nor does it ensure the security of our people. Quite the opposite. It is drawing us deeper and deeper into imperialist antagonisms and making our people a target of retaliation. With the expansion of NATO to the Southeastern Mediterranean, with the immediate accession of Cyprus, the bargaining for the co-management of energy wealth in the wider region is strengthened, as are the efforts to cut off competing energy and commodity transport plans.

We call on the entire Cypriot people, not only to condemn the actions of the Government, but also to actively oppose them. To condemn also the attitude of all bourgeois parties, which in one way or another supported the ‘geo-strategic upgrade’ that transformed Cyprus into a NATO bridgehead. Our people, with their struggle, can thwart the plans of the bourgeois governments and the bourgeoisie for a strategic upgrade of its role in the region."
