“Following the recent developments in our region where the state of Israel has dangerously escalated the situation and with the ongoing genocidal bloodshed on the Palestinian people in Gaza, there is an intense mobilization in all ports and airports of the Republic of Cyprus. Evacuation of tourists from Cyprus and the broader Middle East, military and spy plans and ships coming and going, as well as 200 U.S marine soldiers landing and settling on the island”, the CIC statement points out.
The Communist Initiative of Cyprus adds: “We call on the government to position itself immediately concerning the deeper involvement of our country in NATO plans in the region. We demand the disengagement of our country from the slaughter in Palestine and imperialist interventions, as well as the closure of all bases of death and the withdrawal of all foreign armies”.
AKEL: No facilitation to the refueling of Israel’s deadly war machine!
In a statement against Cyprus' involvement in Israel's warmongering plans, the Press Office of the CC of the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL) points out:
"At a time when the genocide against the Palestinians is raging and tensions in the Middle East are dramatically escalating, the West continues to cover up, arm and support Israel’s war machine that is wreaking havoc and death. The continued support of the Israeli army with weapons, technology and fuel constitutes support and complicity in the bloodshed and atrocities of the Netanyahu government.
The ship “Overseas Santorini” which has sailed from the US in the past few days will sail across the Mediterranean Sea to Israel in order to carry a huge cargo of fuel for Israeli fighter jets. This fact has already mobilised movements, trade unions and parliamentarians from foreign countries in order to prevent the ship’s deadly mission. AKEL calls on the government to ensure that the ship “Overseas Santorini” does not receive any facilitation, refueling or docking in Cyprus as that would amount to facilitating Israel’s war operations. It should be noted that last April, the UN Human Rights Council, in a Resolution, expressed its deep concern that “the sale, supply and transfer of arms and aviation fuel reinforce Israel’s ability, as an occupying power, to commit serious violations, including attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, to disregard international law and to seriously undermine human rights”.
At the same time, AKEL underlines that any approach of the ship in question to our island involves and exposes our country to serious risks. Those who are not moved by the unprecedented barbarity to which the Palestinian people are subjected should at least feel the danger that is created for our own people and our own homeland."
