KKE: Ursula von der Leyen's re-election confirms the "dealings" between conservatives, social democrats and far-rightists in the EU

Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected President of the European Commission, following a vote held today, Thursday 18 July 2024, at the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Her re-election was supported by the European People's Party (EPP), the Social Democrats (S&D) and Liberals, but also by far-right and green political forces. In total it received 401 positive votes, 284 against and 55 abstentions.

KKE voted against von der Leyen's re-election

In a statement (here in Greek), the European Parliament Group of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), notes that it voted against von der Leyen for the presidency of the Commission, while emphasizing that her re-election confirms the "dealings" between the bourgeois governments in the EU - conservative, social democratic and far-right ones- for the distribution of positions in the bodies of the reactionary edifice of the imperialist wolf-pack alliance of the EU".

More specifically, the statement of the European Parliament Group of the KKE on the re-election of von der Leyen as president of the European Commission points out:

"The re-election of Ursula Von der Leyen as president of the European Commission by the anti-popular coalition in the European Parliament (European People's Party, Social Democrats, Liberals) with the... "discreet" support of far-right forces (Meloni, etc) and the Greens confirms the "dealings" between the bourgeois governments in the EU - conservative, social democratic and far-right ones- for the distribution of positions in the bodies of the reactionary edifice of the imperialist wolf-pack alliance of the EU".

With the dangerous guidelines of her new term that von der Leyen presented today to the European Parliament in the midst of intensifying imperialist rivalries between the EU and other centers, as well as the intensity of opposition within it, she signals:

- the intensification of the anti-popular EU policy and monopolies sealed by the EU's even greater military involvement, the recognition of NATO as a "main defense pillar", its transition to a "war economy", the so-called "Defence" Single Market and an " air shield" aimed at the predominance of the Euro-Atlantic camp over capitalist Russia in the imperialist war in Ukraine. Characteristic of the EU's position is the despicable resolution that the European Parliament approved just yesterday, which calls for more weapons to Zelensky and a new round of sanctions that will be paid for by the people. At the same time, Von der Leyen anticipated the intensity of the repression against the people and especially the refugees and immigrants by doubling the forces of Europol and tripling those of Frontex.

- the increase of the multifaceted support of the EU to the state-occupator of Israel for the continuation of the genocide of the Palestinian people.

- the attack of EU and bourgeois governments on the lives and rights of workers in all its member states to increase the profitability of European monopolies, to expand their privileges and facilities, such as those announced in fierce competition with rivals groups of the other imperialist centers.

Based on these directions, the working class in our country will continue to experience crimes such as the closing of the LARCO industry, layoffs, 6-day work and the working middle age, work to death, which are reflected in the EU directives , such as the nickname "pillar of social rights".

The poor farmers will continue to groan under the weight of the "revised" CAP, the very expensive cost of production and the self-employed from wild taxation, dead ends and lockouts. The working class family will continue to be increasingly crushed by the precision, soaring prices of the deregulated energy market due to the EU Energy Exchange and governments, "green" cards, unapproachable rents and auctions, but also the delivery of Education and health in capital. As with private universities, the categorized market school, but also the ND government's new dangerous bill based on EU directives to the detriment of mental health and addiction, the wild cuts in social spending in the context of the new "Stability Pact".

Based on all the above, the KKE voted against von der Leyen for the Presidency of the European Commission.

Against the front of the EU - capital - bourgeois governments, the working people, with the KKE on their side, can organize their own counterattack, opposing the organized struggle to defend their interests, to extract rights, take a breather, demanding immediate measures relief, paving the way for the overthrow of the power of the monopolies and the imperialist associations that serve it, in order to take into their own hands the wealth that they produce and belong to them".
