KKE on the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus

In a declaration "on the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus", the Political Bureau of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) points out that "For 50 years, since the Turkish invasion took place, which led to thousands of dead, missing and displaced , as well as the occupation of 37% of Cyprus to date, the KKE insists firmly on condemning it, highlighting the international character of the Cyprus problem, expressing international solidarity with the working class, the popular strata of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites or Latins".

"The black anniversary of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus provides food for the study of those historical events, as well as for reflection that must be developed among the peoples concerning the negative and dangerous role that the USA, Britain, NATO and the EU have played over time and are still playing today in the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the plans that are developed within the context of the competitions between the bourgeois classes of Greece, Turkey and Cyprus", the Party declaration adds.

The KKE points out that "in 1974, the Cyprus problem was already a tangle of many intertwined contradictions, with deep historical roots. The Zurich-London Agreements were a key point of reference in the last phase of the escalation of the said contradictions" and points out, among other things, that "Junta's coup in Cyprus and the subsequent invasion of the Turkish army, were the dramatic climax and end of the chain of those that preceded them".

The KKE declaration analyzes in detail the contrasts between the bourgeois classes of Greece and Turkey, the crude interventionism of British imperialism which was strengthened by the one of the USA, as well as the contrast between Greece and Cyprus which "was added to the already existing contrasts since the late 1950s."

"The appeal of the Cypriot government to the assistance of the Soviet Union was potentially and objectively creating a wedge in the south-eastern wing of NATO, in a period of intense opposition in the South-Eastern Mediterranean and successive Arab-Israeli war conflicts.

"Based on the above, it becomes clear why the plans that were put on the table led objectively and inevitably to the partition of Cyprus and by extension to the double union of the Cypriot territories with Greece and Turkey respectively, which would also ensure the conversion of the "unsinkable aircraft carrier ", i.e. of Cyprus, as a NATO base in the South-Eastern Mediterranean", the statement points out.
