In a statement issued today, the Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) bids farewell to the iconic Greek actress Irene Pappas who died at the age of 96 in Athens.
With a career spanning more than half a century, Pappas starred in over 70 films, including award-winning films as "The Guns of Navarone" and "Zorba the Greek".
The KKE statement points out:
"It is with great sadness that we pay farewell to the great actress Irene Pappas, an ambassador of the legacy of classical culture and mediterranean aesthetics throughout the world.
Born in 1926 in Chiliomodi, Corinth, Irene Pappas was shaped by the stories of her “great storyteller” grandmother, by the love for the ancient Greek literature instilled in her by her teacher parents, as well as by the waters, the birds, the moon and the shadows of her village which, as she recounted, “taught me how to play”.
The “living Caryatid”, as the international press use to call her, with the Doric profile and high acting which reflected her deeply cultivated personality and her ethos, fully embodied the power of ancient tragedy, while conquering the international theatre and cinema with great roles, among them in “Electra” and “Zorba the Greek” of Michael Cacoyannis and the “Z” of Costa Gavras.
Having participated in more than 80 films internationally, in every parts of the world, alongside great directors and actors, Irene Pappas was honored with many international awards throughout her long career.
