After extensive bargaining within the imperialist NATO alliance, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dropped weeks of resistance to Sweden and Finland’s ambitions to join NATO at talks on Tuesday ahead of the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain.
Erdogan emerged from the meeting with Nordic leaders having secured a 10-point agreement under which the two countries vowed to join Turkey’s fight against banned armed groups, such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and to swiftly extradite suspects to Turkey.
In a statement about the agreement between the Swedish Government and Turkey, the Communist Party of Sweden (SKP) points out:
“The agreement with Turkey shows once again the true nature of the Social Democrats […] In its quest to join NATO, Sweden's bourgeois class and its social democratic government reject everything known as human rights. To become a full member of the imperialist military alliance NATO, it agrees to adopt Turkey's cause”.
Stressing out that the Social Democrats would do everything to ensure Sweden's membership in NATO, the SKP adds: “From pretending to be hesitant about NATO membership, the Social Democrats have gone to do anything to strengthen the competitiveness of Sweden's monopoly capital and secure new markets for this”.
“With the agreement – the SKP underlines – it becomes once again clear that participation in an imperialist alliances poses a threat to the people's democrati rights, which can only be re-established through the struggle for socialism”.
The Communist Party of Sweden (SKP) “condemns the agreement that the Social Democratic Government has made with the Turkish Government, just as it condemns Sweden's accession to NATO”.
