The situation in eastern Mediterranean and the tensions between Turkey and Greece was one of the major issues discussed during the extraordinary EU Foreign Ministers Council which was concluded on Friday. Earlier, Greece’s Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias met with the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Vienna.
Referring to his meeting with Pompeo, Dendias expressed his satisfaction for the “clear stance of the State Department” against Turkey’s provocations, thanking the U.S. Secretary of State on behalf of the Greek government. He also expressed satisfaction for the EU partners’ “support to Greece and Cyprus”.
In a statement issued later on Friday, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) condemned the stance of the Greek government and the remarks made by Foreign Minister Dendias.
The KKE statement reads:
“The governmental claims and the false expectations regarding EU’s support, alongside N. Dendias “thanks” to M. Pompeo, consist a provocation for the people, because the USA-NATO, along with the EU, feed Turkey’s aggression according to their own interests.
In fact, the government hides the fact that the problems in the region and the sharpening of the Turkish aggression were downgraded in the agenda of the EU Foreign Ministers Council’s meeting.
The so-called powerful alliances that the government publicizes are the source of the problem, because they increase the country’s involvement in the imperialist plans and sharpen the escalation of the tension in the region.
Within all these governmental “comings and goings” and the supposed “diplomatic counterattack”, the painful solution of co-exploitation is being prepared, with the active role of Germany and France, against our country’s sovereign rights. For that reason, our people must not show any trust to the government’s choices and the bourgeois parties which have deposited the defense of our country’s sovereign rights and the peace in the region in the hands of NATO, the U.S and the EU”.
It must be noted that from the very beginning of the escalation of the tension in eastern Mediterranean, due to the continuous provocations by Erdogan’s government (Turkish drilling ship Oruc Reis remains within the Greek continental shelf), the KKE has noted that Ankara’s aggression is fostered by the U.S, NATO and EU “allies”.
The Communist Party of Greece has warned that the tense situation in Eastern Mediterranean, alongside the involvement of other countries (France, Israel, Egypt, etc.) can lead to dangerous and negative consequences for the region’s peoples.
In a statement issued last Tuesday (11 August) after Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis' televised remarks, the KKE noted that the governments of Greece and Turkey are engaged in “communication games”, in order to prepare the people for dangerous scenarios. “The dialogue table that is being prepared on the part of the bourgeois classes of Greece and Turkey, with the menu being the co-exploitation (gas resources, hydrocarbons, etc.), serves their own dangerous plans against all the people of East Mediterranean”, the KKE mentioned.
On July 25th, 2020, the Communist Parties of Greece and Turkey issued a joint declaration expressing their deep concern over the development in east Mediterranean and declaring the right of the people, in both sides of the Aegean Sea, to live in peace and shape their future against capitalist exploitation.
