Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez: Who is Cuba's new leader?

Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has been officially nominated for President of the Republic of Cuba's Council of State. 

Born in 1960 in the province of Villa Clara, Díaz Canel  graduated as an Electronics Engineer in 1982. He had been a member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and a professor at Martha Abreu Central University of Las Villas. During the 1980s he was a Young Communist League cadre and in the early 90s he began his work as a Party cadre. Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel fullfiled his international mission in Nicaragua, being the Secretary of the Young Communist League in the country. 

As a cadre of the Young Communist League (UJC) he was member of the Ideological Bureau of the Provincial Commitee of the UJC in Las Villas. In 1989 and until 1990, he was elected Second Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the UJC in Villa Clara and from that year until 1992, he served as the First Secretary of the political youth organization. 

In 1993 he was selected as Second Secretary of the National Committee of the UJC and in the same year, he was elected member of the Executive Bureau of the Provincial Party Committee in Villa Clara, where he served in the Services, Tourism, Transportation, Communications and State and Judicial Bodies sector.


In 1994, he was elected First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Villa Clara and became a member of the Party's Central Committee. Until 2003, Díaz-Canel served as a member of the Central Committee before getting elected to the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the PCC, a position he helds until today. Also, between 2003 and 2010 he was First Secretary of the Provincial Commitee of PCC in Holguin.

In 2010 Díaz-Canel was appointed Minister of Higher Education. On March 2012 he became Vice President of the Council of Ministers.
