"Sovetskaya Rossiya", founded on July 1956, is one of Russia's historic newspapers and the only one which has kept the name "Soviet" in her name, more than 25 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Today, the newspaper is politically orientated towards the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF).
The prize "A Word to the People" was established since 1992. Under this title, the newspaper had published on July 1991 an open letter signed by Soviet politicians, intellectuals and others, pleading against the counter-revolutionary plans for the USSR's dissolution. Since then, the prize is awarded to prominent figures who have written for "Sovetskaya Rossiya" supporting socialism, the soviet values, the struggle for a fair society.
On December 28, 2017, "Sovetskaya Rossiya" published an article by the KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas, under the title "We draw conclusions, we become stronger", on the occasion of the 100 years since the Great October Socialist Revolution.
